Hello :-)
Thank you a lot for the decision to give my pattern a try!
Before we start, some information:
Following stuff will be needed:
♦ Your favorite yarn (This pattern works with every yarn and every hook size)
♦ crochet hook: matching hook to the yarn you choose
♦ Sewing needle for weaving in ends
You will find the following abbreviations in the pattern:
sl st = slip stitch
ch (st) = chain (stich)
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
inc. = increase (=2 dc into the next st.)
fphdc = Front Post Half Double Crochet
bphdc = Back Post Half Double Crochet
The pattern consists of 3 Parts:
1) The beginning: we start from the upper side with a circle, with a circumference as big as the head circumference.
You can just measure the diameter of the circle and use this chart for the right size:
Please note: The diameter gets bigger until the first round without increases. So you should calculate and end the increases 1 round before you reach your required diameter!
2) Middle Part: Here we work without increases, the hat gains height. Crochet the main part as big as you want, end with this part when you want to start the cuff.
I recommend to make the cuff between 5 and 10 cm (2-4 inches).
The total height of the hat should be:
Just end with the main part 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) before you reached the total height.
3) cuff: The hat ends with a cuff. Just crochet the cuff until you reached your required height.
So, let’s go!
The beginning (circle)
Stop with this part as soon as you reached your required circumference! Then go to page 9 and start with the middle part!
We work in closed rounds and we start with a magic ring. (Alternatively you can also crochet 4 ch st and close to a ring with a sl st)
1) Work into the ring:
3 ch st (as replacement for the first dc) and 11 dc.
Close round with a dc into the 3rd ch st of the round:
We have 12 stitches in total.
2) Normally you crochet 3 ch st to replace the first dc of a round. But with some sorts of yarn you see a ugly line on your hat where the beginning of the round is. So we use the following little trick at the beginning of each round (I won’t mention that in the next rounds, but you always start the round like that):
Crochet 1 ch st. (to gain height) and then just crochet 1 dc into the same st. in which you just made the sl st:
(The chain stitch won’t attract attention later)
Crochet another dc into the same st. (=1 inc.):
Crochet 2 dc into every remaining dc of the round. Then close round with a sl st. into the First dc of the round. (the one after the ch st):
We have 24 stitches in total.
3) 2 dc into the first dc (=the one you made the sl st into) (=1 inc.):
Crochet 1 dc into the stitch under the next dc. (You already worked into this stitch last round, I marked the position with the green cross:)
[2 dc into the next dc, then 1 dc into the stitch under the next dc] repeat those instructions until the end of the round. End the round with a sl st into the first dc:
We have 36 stitches in total.
4) [1x inc., 2 dc] Repeat until the end of the round. Close round with a sl st into the first dc of the round:
We have 48 stitches in total.
5) [1x inc., 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next] repeat those instructions until the end of the round. End the round with a sl st into the first dc:
6) [1x inc., 4 dc] Repeat until the end of the round. Close round with a sl st into the first dc of the round:
We have 72 stitches in total.
7) [1x inc., 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next] repeat those instructions until the end of the round. End the round with a sl st into the first dc:
We have 84 stitches in total.
8) [1x inc., 6 dc] Repeat until the end of the round. Close round with a sl st into the first dc of the round.
We have 96 stitches in total.
9) [1x inc., 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next] repeat those instructions until the end of the round. End the round with a sl st into the first dc.
We have 108 stitches in total.
10) [1x inc., 8 dc] Repeat until the end of the round. Close round with a sl st into the first dc of the round. We have 120 stitches in total.
…I made the shown hat with thin yarn and a small hook… But if you haven’t reached the required size now, just continue with the circle until you reached it.
The middle part:
If the last round of the circle is a round in which you made the “deep” dc, you have to make one round with regular dc now.
From now on there are no increases anymore.
We start with the middle part:
1) [2 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next] Repeat until the end of the round. End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round:
2) 1 dc into every dc. End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round.
3) [1 dc, 1 dc into the dc under the next, 1 dc] Repeat until the end of the round.
End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round:
4) 1 dc into every dc. End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round.
5) [1 dc into the dc under the first dc, 2 dc] Repeat until the end of the round.
End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round:
6) 1 dc into every dc. End the round with a sl st into the first dc of the round.
…Now repeat Round 1-6 until you reached the required size.
The cuff:
1) 1 hdc into every st. End with a sl st into the first hdc:
2) 1 fphdc into the first hdc:
1 bphdc into the next hdc:
[1 fphdc, 1 bphdc] Repeat until the end of the round. End with a sl st into the first fphdc:
Repeat the 2nd round until you reached the required height. Always 1 fphdc into every fphdc and 1 bphdc in every bphdc.
…When the hat is big enough, just finish off and weave in the ends.
If you want, you can add a faux fur pompon or make one with yarn and sew it on.
(You can search for “Ponpon DIY” on youtube, there are many instructions 😊)
