Free Crochet Pattern for a Butterfly Wall Hanger

Size:
Approx. 24 x 24 cm
If a yarn with the same gauge is used

Material:
Sport Yarn 50 gr
(if you use a different weighted yarn, you might need more or less of the yarn)
Crochet hook 2 mm
a stick approx. 28 to 30 cm long

The Pattern is written in US terms:
St: Stitch
Ch: Chain
Slst: Slip stitch
Sc: Single crochet
Hdc: half double crochet
Dc: double crochet
Ch sp: chain space
Bl: Block
Sp: Space

Info when the piece is worked with the row-by-row explanation:
The chain stitch counts as a first stitch, unless it's stated differently.
For each Dc from the previous round, we’ll work either 1 dc or 1 ch, and always 1 dc in the chain spaces.
Whenever the pattern calls for 1 ch, we jump over 1 stitch and work the next dc in the following stitch (this is not explained in each row, so remember that 1 ch is always followed by jumping over 1 stitch)

The table runner is worked in the filet crochet technique, where it’s worked in blocks and spaces. The blocks always consist of 3 dc and the Spaces always consist of 1 dc, 1 ch (jump over 1 stitch), 1 dc.
With this, the first and last dc of a Space or block is always the first and last from the previous space or block
This Info is not as important when you work with the row by row explanation as it's written what to work, but might help a bit with understanding the technique.
If there are more than one space following each other, I'll usually write in the pattern how many spaces are worked for this part to make it a bit easier.

The row always begins with 3 ch and a minimum of 2 dc in the following 2 stitches, and ends with a minimum of 3 dc in the last 3 stitches and the very last dc in the third ch from the previous row. (you can see it in the photos with the green needle)

When working chain stitches, make sure not to work them too tight.

The wall hanger has 36 blocks and 26 rows.

This pattern is worked in filet crochet which contains blocks and spaces, each block has 3 dc, each space has 1 dc, 1 ch and jumps over 1 stitch, 1 dc.
The first or last dc of a block or a space is also counted as the first or last dc of the next block or space. Which means if there are 2 or more blocks after each other, the last dc from the block before counts as the first dc of the new one, with that 2 blocks have 5 dc’s, 3 blocks have 7 dc’s, 4 blocks have 9 dc`s and so on. I added a graph to show it better, but you can always contact me with any questions.

The row always begins with 3 ch (which is counted as the first stitch) and a minimum of 2 dc in the following 2 stitches, and ends with a minimum of 3 dc in the last 3 stitches and the very last dc in the third ch from the previous row. (you can see it in the photos with the green needle)

Loosely cast on 76 stitches and work the first dc in the 4. stitch from the hook (a row has always 73 stitches, either dc or ch stitches)
The graph is worked twice. Work it once and start again but leave out the first row, so the picture is the other way around.

Attach the hanger to the stick:

I’ve just used a stick I had lying around from my son, he loves to collect all the sticks on a walk and brings them all home. So, I have quite a few to choose from. I did sand down the stick a bit so it’s not too rough.
To attach the crochet piece, I’ve used a darning needle and took an approx. 5 meter long thread of the used yarn and sew each stitch onto the stick as shown in the pictures. I then attached a little hanger to the stick as well with an approx. 50 cm long thread and used a knot on both sides of the stick.
