In this blog post, I’ll show you step by step how to crochet your own chestnut – perfect as decoration, a gift, or a cute accessory! Grab your crochet hook, and let’s get started!
Preparation:
Materials List:
- Crochet hook size 4 mm
- Acrylic yarn (50 g/120 m) in green, as well as beige/white and dark brown (alternatively, other yarn with a matching hook)
- Stitch markers or a contrasting thread
- Stuffing
- 8 mm safety eyes
- Embroidery thread in white for stitching
Abbreviations:
- sc - single crochet
- ch - chain
- sl st - slip stitch
- st - stitch
- inc - increase (2 stitches in one stitch)
- dec - decrease (crochet 2 stitches together)
- rep - repeat
- PS - Popcorn stitch
Notes:
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all parts are crocheted in spiral rounds, even if the pattern specifies, for example, "3 rounds sc."
The numbers before each step indicate the row/round number.
The number in parentheses at the end of each step indicates the number of stitches at the end of that step.
Crochet pattern:
Body:
in dark brown
2 ch or Magic Ring
Round 1: 6 sc (6)
Round 2: double each st (12)
Round 3: double every 2nd.st (18)
Round 4: double every 3rd.st (24)
Round 5: double every 4th.st (30)
Round 6: double every 5th.st (36)
Round 7: double every 6th.st (42)
Round 8: double every 7th.st (48)
Round 9 - 15: sc in each st for 7 rounds (48)
Round 16: sc together every 7th and 8th st (42)
Round 17: sc together every 6th and 7th st (36)
Round 18: sc together every 5th and 6th st (30)
Round 19: sc together every 4th and 5th st (24)
Round 20: sc together every 3rd and 4th st (18)
Now insert the eyes between Rounds 12 and 13 with a distance of 5 stitches between them, and stuff the body well.
Round 21: sc together every 2nd and 3rd st (12)
Round 22: sc together every 1st and 2nd st (6)
Slip stitch into the next stitch, cut the yarn, and close the small hole. To do this, insert the needle from the outside through the front loop of each of the 6 stitches. Repeat this for all 6 stitches. Then pull the yarn, and the hole will close by itself.
Shell (work 2x):
Note: Popcorn stitches (PS) are used for the shell. To make a PS, crochet 3 double crochets into one stitch and then finish them together.
Here’s how it works:
Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop. Now there are three loops on the hook (Image 1). Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops (Image 2). Repeat this two more times – in the end, there will be 4 loops on the hook (Image 3) which you then pull through together (Image 4).

Round 1: 6 sc (6)
Round 2: double each st (12)
Round 3: (1 sc, 1 PS) x rep. 6 times (12)
Round 4: double each st (24)
Round 5: (1 sc, 1 PS) x rep. 12 times (24)
Round 6: double every 2nd st (36)
Round 7: (1 sc, 1 PS) x rep. 18 times (36)
Round 8: double every 3rd st (48)
Round 9: (1 sc, 1 PS) x rep. 24 times (48)
Round 10: sc in each st (48)
Switch to beige on the last stitch of the round by finishing this stitch with beige. (First, insert the hook with the green yarn through the loops of the last stitch of the previous round and pull up the yarn. Then, leave the green working yarn hanging and attach the beige yarn. Now, with the hook, pull the beige yarn through the two green loops.)
Round 11: First, turn your work – you will now crochet in the opposite direction because the popcorn stitches will be on the "not-so-pretty side." The inside of the chestnut should be on the pretty side.
Complete the round with single crochet stitches (sc), but only into the back loop (48)
Round 12: sc together every 7th and 8th st (42)
Round 13: sc together every 6th and 7th st (36)
Round 14: sc together every 5th and 6th st (30)
Round 15: sc together every 4th and 5th st (24)
Round 16: sc together every 3rd and 4th st (18)
Round 17: sc together every 2nd and 3rd st (12)
Round 18: sc together every 1st and 2nd st (6)
Assembly Instructions:
Join the two shell halves together by sewing them with green yarn over 6 to 7 stitches. Use the exposed loop at the transition between the outer and inner shell for this.
Now, only a few details need to be stitched onto the face. With white yarn, create the outline of the eyes and stitch on a small mouth.
