As a natural material, felt is characterised by high absorbency, strong resistance and insulation properties. It also inspires with the way it feels because it is cuddly soft. It is therefore not surprising that felting is also becoming increasingly fashionable again. You can either felt unspun raw wool into a firm fabric. Or you can use felting yarn for your crochet work and then process the finished product so that its surface becomes felted. Since this process will slightly change your crochet piece, you should always follow the crochet felting manuals. If you follow a few small tricks, crocheting and felting is not magic.

Slippers are also popular objects, which are made with felting wool and then felted in the washing machine, contributing to a cosy feeling of home. You can give your crocheted flowers a special touch. The crocheted and felted flower looks particularly attractive as a decoration for the table or as an unusual gift tag. Actually, the term crochet felting speaks for itself. Because it explains in two words what is going on: You finish a certain product with the crochet technique, whose fabric structure you change afterwards with the washing machine and the wet felt technique. Felting only works with untreated felting wool. This is because the outer cuticle layer of the individual wool hairs is used to create an unstructured fabric. Friction, kneading, heat and water cause the small scales of the wool hairs to interlock. This gives the crochet piece a soft, fluffy surface. It keeps you very warm and is also extremely durable. The crochet felting patterns on our portal are all written in an easy to understand way and clearly illustrated, so that nothing can go wrong with your project.
Crocheting and felting is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced crocheters. If you are a crochet professional, you will have no difficulty with a guide to crocheting and felting a hat or some mittens. If you have no crochet experience, you should start with a simple project, such as a crocheted decorative flower. It is essential that you use untreated wool, and then follow the crochet tutorial closely for the correct sizes. Then put your finished product in the washing machine for felting. You should avoid using fabric softener. You should use a normal cycle, no economy program, switch to 40 degree Celsius wash and dose the detergent as usual. The washing machine does the rest. Small crochet pieces can be easily washed in the 40-degree wash for felting. After felting, pull your end product into shape and let it dry. You will discover many wonderful crochet felting manuals on our portal for every level of know-how. Just let yourself be inspired!

Would you like to try crocheting and felting, but have no idea what might be suitable for your project? Then we have put together some great ideas for you, which you can easily put into practice. Especially nice and at the same time practical would be, for example, a few self-made crocheted and felted egg warmers. The small fluffy hats on the soft-boiled egg not only decorate the breakfast table, but also keep the delicious breakfast egg warm. Also, a cup warmer is certainly a good thing. Because if the cup is insulated from the outside, you can enjoy a hot coffee longer. In winter, you can quickly warm up your hands in icy temperatures in a muff you have crocheted yourself and then felted. And your ears are also particularly warm under a DIY ear warmer. If you would rather decorate your living room sofa, we recommend crocheting a pillowcase, which you can then make extra fluffy in the washing machine. You can also use the crochet felting technique to enhance a bag or small purse you have crocheted yourself.
When crocheting hats, the most important thing is to pay attention to the size. Remember that your final product will be about 30 percent smaller than the crocheted hat. Therefore, it is best to first make a test patch of about 15 by 15 centimetres. Write down the number of stitches used and the crocheted rows exactly. Then you felt your sample in the washing machine and measure it again. This way, you will know exactly how your felting wool behaves and you can adapt the instructions for felting and crocheting to your head size. When your hat is finished, you have to get it back into shape after you have put it in the washing machine. You can stuff it with kitchen paper or put it on a doll's head or on the neck of a bottle to dry.
If you want to give your little furry friends a special treat, give them a cat basket that you have made yourself. You can adjust the diameter of the basket to the size of your cat. You can also respond to their special preferences. Some cats love a bed with a high edge to hide behind. Other house cats prefer a flat cat basket, which makes it easy for them to get in and out. However, they all have one thing in common: they like it cuddly and soft. That's why it makes sense to make your DIY cat basket from felting wool and then felt the surface in the washing machine. With this project you should not forget the shrinking, either. And for drying, make sure you stuff your homemade cat basket to give it a nice shape.
Even crocheted and felted flowers are great decorative objects. You can, for example, scatter them in different colours on your breakfast table to create a spring-like atmosphere. As a tag they decorate a lovingly wrapped gift. Or you can sew them onto a crocheted bag as a special decoration. Crocheting flowers is not difficult, so even the beginner can do it effortlessly. You either make up the pattern yourself or follow one of our many tutorials. After drying, you can decorate your flower with pretty buttons or small beads. A little tip: if you don't want to sew the beginning and end of the thread, cut it off after you've put it through the washing machine. A felted fabric can no longer separate.
Slippers are especially popular with the crochet felting professionals. Since the shoes are supposed to fit after so much work, you should really do a gauge or stitch test. Because even if you use a manual with a size chart, not every yarn will react the same way to felting in the washing machine. So be sure to write down your stitch count, the crocheted rows and the size of your sample patch before felting. If the slippers feel a bit tight after felting because you bump your toes at the front when you put them on, that's not actually too bad. They will get wider with time. Slippers that are minimally too wide despite having been processed in the washing machine can be adjusted with the help of a rubber that can be sewn in.
If you have invented a great crochet felting pattern yourself, you can upload them here and even earn a little pocket money on the side. All you have to do is write it in an easy to understand text and illustrate it with descriptive pictures. How to eventually upload your tutorial to our portal is explained in our guide to selling patterns.
