The Chinese lantern is one of the projects that older children can tackle on their own. The materials you need are an empty, round cheese box, tracing paper, kraft paper or wrapping paper, scissors, a tea light, and glue. If you want to hang up your home-made lantern, you should also have a piece of wire that’s 20 or 25 centimetres long. And if you want to carry your self-made Chinese lantern during the St. Martin's procession, you will need a wooden stick. If you want to use your own creativity, you can avoid using wrapping paper. Instead, you can decorate a piece of kraft paper with a pattern you have thought up yourself. When you invent the pattern, remember that it should still look pretty when cut into strips. A Chinese lantern can be made in different sizes, depending on the diameter of the cheese box.
For several years now, the unicorn has been at the top of the popularity scale. Whether large or small, the mythical creature evokes excitement. Gifted illustrators can make the templates for the head, ears and horn themselves. If you’re not confident to paint the unicorn yourself, you can download the corresponding template. To make sure that your self-made unicorn lantern will be well received by young and old, you should use the typical unicorn colours when painting it. And you should also create the mythical creature's mane from wool threads in pink, light blue and purple. To give your lantern a fairy tale charm, decorate it with glitter powder or glitter dust. This can either be applied with a brush. Or you can work on the area that is supposed to glitter with a paper glue stick and sprinkle the glitter dust over it.
If you have already made a unicorn lantern, you should have no problem making a horse lantern. You can either use the template for the unicorn lantern, or you can draw the template for the horse yourself. In the tutorials you will find out how to assemble the parts of your lantern. If you are even the proud owner of your own horse, it is a great idea to enlarge and print out a photo of your favourite animal. You can either cut and paste the outline of the photo onto tracing paper or print the photo on tracing paper. In both cases you can make a custom horse lantern with the print. The self-made lantern is suitable for the St. Martin’s day parade and as party decoration. Or you can label the great lantern with the name of your horse and use it as a cool name tag in the stable.
If you have forgotten that there is a lantern procession tonight, and now you stand there empty-handed, you need not despair. You can get patterns from us on how to make a last minute lantern. A pretty lantern can be made of many materials. Even if no shop is open, you usually have everything you need at home to realize your project. For a small lantern you can use a plastic cup. Cut out holes for eyes, nose and mouth with a sharp knife and cover them from the inside with sandwich paper or baking paper. You can leave the paper white or paint it with watercolours. To hang it up, drill a hole in the bottom of the cup with a screwdriver and insert a lantern rod with LED light through it. A larger Last Minute Lantern can be made from an empty PET bottle or from a used milk or juice carton.
The typical cliché that girls play with dolls and boys would like to become racing drivers is not always true. But the difference between the female and male sex cannot be completely denied. So it is quite natural that girls have a different idea about the decoration of their room than boys. Since pink is a colour that most girls like, the girls' lantern as a room decoration must also have this colour. Furthermore, the shape should match the taste of your little princess. In addition to the popular unicorn or horse lantern, a heart lantern or cat lantern is also very popular. A cute owl, an illuminated fairy tale castle or a pretty fairy can also be made as a girl lantern.
Even though the lantern might not become a permanent decoration in the boys' room, it should not be missing at the birthday party. A typical boy's lantern is only designed in light blue for the smallest children. At the age of three years at the latest, when the little heroes get excited about cars, dinosaurs, dangerous dragons, or monsters, you should start making a boy's lantern with the little world explorer's favourite character. With a little skill, cardboard, and transparent paper you can build almost any lantern you want. If you have rummaged through all our manuals for making lanterns and have not found the object you are looking for, you can at least get a good idea for one from one of our many patterns. To realize a concrete wish of your sweetheart, you can also copy, enlarge, and cut out a photo or a picture in a picture book.
To find the right material for making lanterns, you have to follow a few rules.
Because paper is easily inflamed by a thoughtless movement or a strong gust of wind, it is safer not to put or glue an open flame into the homemade lantern. Instead of a candle or tea light you can use an LED tea light or a lantern stick with attached LED. If you make your DIY-lamp out of different materials, it makes sense to glue it with the hot glue gun. If you only use cardboard or paper, the paper glue is sufficient. If you want to print on tracing paper, you can use architect paper or thick tracing paper from the handicraft shop. Homemade paper lanterns with printed photos are especially suitable as decorative items for adults.
