The death’s-head hawkmoth has been a legendary symbol since the film “The Silence of the Lambs” at the latest, but this large moth species also had a tiny appearance as a harbinger of doom in the novel Dracula, roughly 100 years earlier. Nocturnal and with fascinating markings - a skull and sometimes even crossed leg bones! In short: a legendary motif that definitely wants to be immortalized on a pair of socks! Of course including the moon, stars and one or two perhaps occult symbols…

US 4/5 US 6/6.5 US 7.5/8.5 US 9/10 US 11/11,5 US 12/13

EU 34/35 EU 36/37 EU 38/39 EU 40/41 EU 42/43 EU 44/45
Yarn: Use highquality yarn with 390 - 400 meters per 100 grams
Toes, the part of the foot up to the beginning of the gusset, heels and cuffs are knitted in the main colour.
You need between 50 grams (size US 4) and 80 grams (size US 13).
The moth is knitted in a contrasting colour. You need between 18 grams (size US 4) and 25 grams (size
US 13).
Needles:
Stranded colorwork often results in a slightly tighter knit than stockinette stitch. Therefore, my tip: use
two different needle sizes for the different areas of the socks!
For the pattern part, use the needle size according to the gauge (see below), size EU 2.5 - 3 / US 1.5 - 3
depending on how tight / loose you knit.
For the solid colour part (toe, parts of the foot, heel, and ribbed cuffs), go a quarter or half needle size
down, size EU 2 2.75 / US 0 2, depending on how tight / loose you knit.
I recommend using circular needles and the magic loop technique. You can also knit the socks with doublepointed needles, but you still need 2 circular knitting needles to cast on the socks (you start the socks at the toes).
Further materials:
• Stitch markers plus one special to mark the beginning of the round (= round marker)
• Tapestry needle
