I feel the same way. My son raves about diggers / excavators and all the big machines and vehicles. I had to give in to the urge and crochet him a digger hat. This pattern is the result.
This hat is crocheted upwards from the cuff. For the digger / excavator pattern, a combination of Fair Isle and Intarsia is used. There are links to tutorials for: Fair Isle and Intarsia.
And good news: The hat can be completed quickly, as you only need dc, hdc and post stitches.
