Our purring friends know perfectly how to show when they enjoy something special: This can be a very cosy cat basket, a great cat cave to hide in or a funny toy. If you crochet the cat accessories yourself, you will help to make your little house cat feel comfortable. If you are not yet very experienced in crocheting, you can start with a basket. You only need to know a few different stitches and no particularly tricky increases or decreases are necessary. If you count yourself among the crochet professionals, you can confidently tackle a complicated cat toy or a cat blanket with a special design. You will find a suitable tutorial for every taste and level of know-how on our portal. If you follow the instructions carefully, you will quickly have a nice accessory for your little friend.
Show more »It's too cute when little kittens run after a ball of wool, crawl through tunnels, play football almost like the professionals or fight with a toy mouse. Strictly speaking, the little furry friends don't need any special toy at all. They can shoot a pencil through the living room as well as a cat ball. They love to spread out the toilet roll outside the bathroom and they can spend hours with magazines and boxes. But if you just let them do their thing, you have to expect them to destroy a lot of things. Therefore, it makes sense to provide the little rascals with their own toys and, for example, to crochet the cat toys yourself. Crocheted mice are especially popular. But also, small soft balls, snakes, fish or small octopuses animate the little cuties.
To please your house cat with a ball, you don't have to be very skilled, because crocheting a cat ball is not very difficult. If you have mastered the single (US: double) crochet stitches and also know how to increase and decrease stitches, you are on the safe side. You can crochet the ball in one colour or in different colours. Your cat doesn't care, because as dichromats they see less colours than we do. But it is important that you do not work too loosely, otherwise your four-legged friend will get caught in the filling material with their claws and pull it out of the ball bit by bit. If you decide on a big ball, you can put a small plastic container (for example the plastic egg of a kinder surprise egg) with grains of rice in the middle. Then the kitten will not only be able to throw and roll the ball but will also enjoy the little rustling noises. Dried catnip is also often stuffed in the middle of a ball. Because cats love this herb, your crocheted cat ball will quickly become a favourite toy.
Cats love mice, both the live ones and as small toy animals. With a crocheted mouse your cat can play especially well, because it can grab the toy with its claws. If you give your mouse a long tail, you can join in the game. Or you can make the tail from several threads. To crochet the cat mouse, you should not choose the wool too thick. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the mouse will be. Also, the mouse is only crocheted with single (US: double) crochet stitches. You start at the nose and then increase up to the belly. Then you have to crochet stitches together again for the mouse's back. In addition to the normal cotton wool you can fill your cat toy with a small bell (like the chocolate Easter bunnies often have around their necks). However, you should put the bell into a small plastic box, otherwise it won't ring. By the way, if you don't manage to crochet so tightly that your filling cotton doesn't shine through the stitches, you can try your luck with a smaller crochet hook.
Many cats do not only love to play hide and seek, they also like to retreat to sleep. To give your furry little nose a special treat and at the same time offer it a safe haven, you can crochet a cat tunnel. It is not difficult at all. However, you won’t finish too fast, because you need a lot of strength and probably can't crochet for long stretches. Because you use a very thick yarn (fabric yarn), which you either buy ready-made or make yourself from old T-shirts. Your cat tunnel will be even softer, but just as stable if you cut the fabric yarn from soft fleece blankets. For the stability you add in metal rings. The rings are available in different sizes. Don't choose them too small, so that your cat won't get stuck – even after eating.
If you want to crochet a cat bed or a cat basket, you not only need a firm but also a sturdy yarn. Again, we recommend cutting up old fleece blankets, which you can convert into fabric yarn yourself. The thicker you choose your yarn, the more difficult it is to work with a crochet hook. If you don't get along with the needle, just leave it out and simply crochet with your hands. Since you never have many loops on the needle with single (US: double) crochet stitches, this is quite feasible. In order to make your crocheted cat bed or cat basket look neat and tidy, you should finish each round with a slip stitch. And in order for you not to get confused when counting the rounds, it is helpful to mark the beginning of each round with a safety pin or a coloured thread.
In order to make your self-crocheted cat's den as sturdy as possible and to prevent your little furry nose from literally having the roof fall on its head, you need a thick yarn. It’s best if you work with a fabric yarn. Secondly you have to crochet firmly. So, choose your crochet hook one size smaller than indicated in the pattern. And third, you need muscles and stamina. It's quite tiring to crochet with a strong thread. If necessary, you can give your cave extra support with a metal ring or a wooden ring from the craft shop, depending on the manual. By the way, cats do not always curl up when sleeping. They also like to stretch out their legs from time to time. Therefore, you should choose the size of your cat’s cave carefully so it won’t be too small.

If you want to crochet cat accessories yourself, of course you need the yarn first of all. The thickness of the yarn depends on your project. If you want to make something big and strong, choose a thread that is as thick as possible. Fabric yarn is best, which you can even make yourself. However, you should remember that the thicker your thread, the more strength you will need to crochet. If your thread is too thick for the crochet hook, you can crochet by hand.
For small, self-made cat toys you should use a medium thread. Of course, the size of your crochet hook depends, as always, on the thread size. When crocheting for cats, however, you should always choose the smallest possible size. Because when you're making toys, you have to crochet especially firm so that the filling doesn't push through the stitches. If you want to surprise your house cat with a bed, your crochet work must also be as strong and sturdy as possible. For the cat toys you also need a filling material. Filling cotton wool or cotton wadding is suitable here. You can get these in the arts and crafts shop. For the stability of a cat tunnel or cave, metal rings may be necessary. For sewing threads, you either use a thick darning needle, or you crochet it with your crochet hook. For cutting you still need scissors and a few round markers won't hurt either.
