Snowman with a lantern
The size of your snowman will depend on the yarn you use. The thicker the yarn the bigger the toy you will get.
The height of my snowman is 12 cm + 4 cm the height of the hat. I used 100% acrylic yarn, 450 m/100 g, 1,25 mm crochet hook.
Materials:
You can choose the yarn at your discretion, of a similar color, composition and thickness. Acrylic, cotton will do. Yarn consumption depends on its thickness and a crochet hook size. My snowman consumed: around 10g of white colour yarn, 5g of other colours.
Yarn of the following colours is required:
- for snowman: white, brown, orange;
- for hat: red, green, black;
- for lantern: brown and yellow;
- for a scarf: choose 3 matching colours;
- Crochet hooks in two sizes. I used No.1.25 and No. 2.0;
- Hollow fibre, toy/cushion filling
- All purpose clear transparent glue, e.g. UHU
- 2 beads for eyes or ready - made eyes, I used 8 mm half - beads
- A sewing needle, matching sewing threads
- A long needle for sculpting, strong thread for sculpting
- For embroidery: a few threads of black and white
- Beads of red color - to decorate the cylinder
- A piece of wire approx. 1,0 mm thick and 35 cm long for the arms
- A piece of thick cardboard (for the base)
- A few glass granules - for the balance of the figure
- Dry soft pastels or any other suitable means for tinting (brown and pink). I used eye shadows
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
st - stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
inc – increase (2 sc in 1 st)
dec – decrease (single crochet two stitches together)
hdc – half double crochet
(...) x N times – repeat instructions in brackets N times
Arms (make 2)
Prepare 2 pieces of wire approx. 15 cm, bend it in half. Twist a loop at the end of the wire.
Work with brown colour yarn. Crochet with yarn in 2 additions. For crocheting arms, take a larger hook.
Work 15 ch. Attach the wire. Hold the end of thread place the hook under the wire and pull the thread, make a loop and work 1sc. Use pliers to tightly squeeze the spots where wire got bent. See at the photo.
Further crochet 5 sc, grabbing the loops of the chain and wire. Thus the wire will hide on the inside.
Continue work 4 ch, starting from 2nd ch from hook: 3 sc – it's a thumb.
Continue to work until the end of the chain: 10 sc.
Cut off yarn, leave a tail for further operation.

It’s important to properly spread the hollow firbe. Fill cheeks well.

Sculpturing and decoration
Find the points for sculpting as follows. Divide the head into halves both horizontally and vertically. See the pictures for guidance.
Point 0 is on the top of the head.
Points 1 & 2; 3 & 4 - are in Rnd 44. Distance between points 1 & 2, (3 & 4) – 2 sc, between points 2 & 3 is 6 sc.
Points 5 & 6 is in the centre of the neck between rounds 36 & 37.
Prepare a long needle for sculpting and a strong thread, make a knot.
Insert the needle in the opening in the head (point 0), hide the knot in the hollow fibre, take the needle out in spot 5 on the neck. Make a very tiny stitch to fasten the thread.
Insert the needle out in point 6, take the needle out in point 2 (thread runs inside the head). Insert the needle in point 1 (thread runs over the work), take it out in point 6. Tighten the thread, help with the fingers to keep it in place. Make a short stitch and a knot. Repeat the tightening once more.
Repeat sculpting for the left eye socket. Points #5-3-4-6.
Hide the end.
Optional: tint the eye sockets before you glue the eyes on. This will make them look more expressive. I used eye shadows of brown colour and a brush. See photos for guidance. Glue the eyes into the eye sockets.
Embroider the whites of the eyes with white colour yarn. See the photo for guidance.
Insert the needle in the opening on the head to hide the ends. Do not forget to pull the loops on the head top once you have finished to embroider.
