Free Crochet Pattern for Gingerbread Man

SUPPLIES

cotton yarn (e.g. Schachenmayr Catania 125m/50g) in three colors: brown, red and white, crochet hook 3 mm, Polyester fiberfill stuffing, 2 black beads or safety eyes, white bead, scissors, yarn needle, aliminum wire, wire cutter.

The ready doll is approx. 21 cm, can be made bigger or smaller depending on the yarn and hook you use.

ABBREVIATIONS

Ch =chain

St = stitch

Sc =single crochet

Sl st = slip stitch

dec = decrease stitch (two single crochets together)

inc = increase stitch (two single crochets into one stitch)

Dc = double crochet

Rnd = Round

TIPPS

• Do not join rounds, work in a continuous spiral.
• Use a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark the end or the beginning of a round
• All stitches are worked into both loops, unless stated otherwise in the pattern.
• Doll can be made in any desired colours.

Seamsless way of changing color when working in the round

Pick up the new color at the end of the round: inset your hook into the stitch, yarn over the new color and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook to complete the stitch.

Front Post Double Crochet:

Yarn over, insert your hook between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches

Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch. You now have 3 loops on the hook

Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice. 

One front post double crochet (FP dc) is complete.

INSTRUCTIONS

LEG (2x)

Start with brown color yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12 stitches)

Rnd 3: *sc in each of next 3 sts, inc* (15 stitches)

Rnd 4-5: sc in each of next 15 sts 

Rnd 6: *sc in each of next 4 sts, inc* (18 stitches)

Rnd 7-9: sc in each of next 18 sts

Rnd 10: *sc in each of next 5 sts, inc* (21 stitches)

Rnd 11-15: sc in each of next 21 sts

Bind off. Work the second leg the same way but don´t cast off.

BODY

Continue crocheting in rounds:

Rnd 16: chain 5 stitches, work one round over both legs (21 stitches  of the first leg, sc in each of next 5 sts, 21 stitches of the second leg)

Rnd 17: sc in each of next 15 sts, inc, sc in each of next 25 sts, inc, sc in each of next 10 sts (54 stitches)

Rnd 18: sc in each of next 54 sts

Rnd 19: sc in each of next 16 sts, inc, sc in each of next 26 sts, inc, sc in each of next 10 sts (56 stitches)

Change the color

At the end of the 6th round change to red color yarn.

Rnd 7: sc in each of next 15 sts

Change the color

At the end of the 7th round change to white color yarn

Rnd 8: sc in each of next 15 sts

Change the color

At the end of the 8th round change to brown color yarn

Rnd 9-19: sc in each of next 15 sts

Rnd 20: *dec, sc in each of next 3 stitches* (12 sts)

Rnd 21: sc in each of next 12 sts

Rnd 22: *dec*, repeat from* to* 6 times

Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Work the second arm the same way.

CANDY CANE

Start with white color yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12 sts)

Change the color

Work the next round with red color yarn: sc in each of next stitch around.

Worked in continuous rounds, DO NOT join with a slip stitch between rounds.

Repeat until your piece measures about 12 cm. 

Fill in the candy cane. Cut a length of aluminum wire of about 25 cm. Fold it in half and twist the two halves around each other so that they stay firmly together. Push the wire all the way through the candy cane and cut any extra wire sticking out.

*dec* 6 times.

Bind off and sew the last 6 sts close. Weave in all your ends. Finally, model your candy cane by bending the aluminum wire.

SUGAR HAT

Rnd 1: Chain 4 stitches, join with sl st into ring. Ch3, 11dc into ring, sl st (12  stitches).

Rnd 2: ch3, dc in the same st as ch, 2 dc in each of next 11 sts, sl st to top of ch 3 (24 stitches)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in the same st as ch, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st*, repeat from*to* 11 times, sl st to top of ch 3 (36 stitches)

Rnd 3: chain 1 and sc into the same stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, 5 dc into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, sc into the next stitch*, repeat from* until the end of the round.

ASSEMBLY

Sew arms to the body.

Position eyes and sew them to the head.

Embroider mouth, also eyebrows and nose if desired.

Sew bead and satin ribbon on the body of the gingerbread man.

Sew the hat on the head of the doll.
