Let´s crochet: the “House Gnome Snorre“

In old Scandinavian legends gnomes are little familiar spirits, sometimes hobgoblins, which are doing good and standing by the house inhabitants. Snorre is an ancestor of former times, one of the oldest gnomes. Hang up on a wall or door he will be a guard and custodian of your house/home. A guardian of your family – especially in Christmas times – but also in hard days he stands (oh well…hang up …) by you with luck and love. And he will regard you and your guests with favor…but woe betide you if you disturb the peace at home … then run!

Gnome Snorre is made up of 3 main parts: Pointy hat – face/body – long shaggy beard
You work flat on the back side, in order that your gnome is adjacent to a wall or door.
Work e.g. with jute, pure new wool and eyelash yarn for a fur effect.
Protected against rain you can hang him up outside … but note: such a House Gnome like to have a snug and gregarious place … no freezing at all! ;-)

Mainly you work in rounds with chains, single crochets and double crochets

Please note to the shaggy beard:
You can of course alternatively crochet or knit the beard to your liking.
In this pattern, however, a technique of filet crochet and weaving is explained,
so that a beautiful heavy hanging shaggy beard is created.

My yarn:

• 2 skeins of Alafosslopi by Istex, 100% new Icelandic wool, 100g (3.5oz) approx. 100m (109 yds.) yardage, use 2 skeins à 100g for 3 crocheted hats at least.
• 1 skein of Jute twine 3ply, thread size approx. 1,75-2mm (0.07”- 0.08”); 200g (7.05oz)/ approx.120-133m (ca. 131-145 yds.) yardage. (Note gauge and wpi in written pattern for alternative yarns)
• 1 skein Lettlopi by Istex, 100% new Icelandic wool, 50g (1.76oz) /100m (109 yds.) yardage (thinner variation of Alafosslopi, half the weight of) & a little bit reinforcement tearproof yarn (as well explained in written pattern)

• Eyelash Yarn - : I have used a Turkish one e.g. AYAZ Yumos ,100% polyester, 100g (3.5oz)/140m (153yds.) yardage, use alternative yarns with approx.100m (109 yds.)-140m (153yds.) yardage

• Wooden ball
• Different hooks: EU Nr. 3,5 - 4,5 & 6,0 / US E/4 – 7 & J/10
